The Vatican First Day Covers 1929 thru 1949 slideshow
will begin shortly!

1929-1945: With few exceptions, FDCs available during this period of Vatican City postal history are found without an associated cachet design. With the exception of the first issue and the Sede Vacante issue of 1939, most of the FDCs during this period are also usually addressed to a recipient.

Postmark development begins with vertical lines in both the upper and lower moons, which continues occasionally into the late 1940's. The outer ring top changes from POSTE VATICANE to CITTA' DEL VATICANO. The lower outer ring changes from a single star ro the word POSTE . Star Seperators are added. Eventually POSTA AEREA is used for airmail service.

No special first day postmarks are usually found for this period. Most covers get canceled with whatever hand stamp that was conveniently available on the counter was used to cancel first-day covers Canceling machines are introduced it the late 1930 but the majority of first-day covers are canceled using handstamp devices..
