Albino Luciani’s reputation of holiness spread very early on with many praying to him and requesting the opening of his cause for beatification. The process has now come to a conclusion, thanks to the recognition of a miracle that took place in Brazil on 23 July 2011 when a little girl dying of a very serious illness was healed through his intercession. Pope Francis declared him venerable in November 2017 and will now beatify him on 4 September 2022. Albino Luciani is universally remembered as “the smiling pope”, a characteristic that associated humility, also expressed by the motto Humilitas, with the true impact of his magisterium founded on simplicity and spontaneity of language, mercy, closeness to the people, concern for the neediest people and a renewed missionary spirit. His was a short pontificate, but offering an eternal legacy. He held only four general audiences that through their fulfillment seem to have encapsulated a sense of his entire magisterium.
