The set of five stamps shown above was issued on June 12, 1962 for the purpose of stimulating interest in vocations to the priesthood and the religious life. Three of the stamps bear a representation of a 4th-century statue of the Good Shepherd, presently located in Rome at the Lateran Museum. To the right of the figure appear the words "The priest, another Christ" in Latin. The other two stamps show a field at harvest time. These bear a Latin inscription which means "Pray the Lord of the harvest to send forth laborers unto His harvest." Issuance of this set follows the first International Congress on Priestly Vocations at the Vatican, which was attended by more than 400 laymen, priests and bishops. Meeting in the Vatican's Consistorial Hall, this group concluded its deliberations with an address in Latin by Pope John XXIII.
