Giambattista Tiepolo
250th Anniversary of His Death

Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (born 5 March 1696) is a Rococo artist from Venice termed by a biographer, Michael Levey, as "the greatest decorative painter of eighteenth-century Europe, as well as its most able craftsman." (Yale University Press: 2004). Tiepolo produced works in Venice and the Veneto, as well as Wurzburg and Spain. He is noted for his very large frescoes as well as paintings on canvas. A catalogue listing of his works includes at least 75 paintings on both religious and classical topics which are located in galleries world-wide. A miniature sheet containing four €1,10 stamps depicts the fresco "The Sacrifice of Isaac" painted by Tiepolo between 1727-1728. It is the Biblical story (Genesis 22) of Abraham's obedience to God in offering his son Isaac as a sacrifice, while an angel (depicted on the miniature sheet) stops Abraham's hand. The episode teaches that because Abraham obeyed God, he became the father of believers.
