The Cote d'Ivorie (Ivory Coast) is a coastal republic in West Africa, independent of France since 1960. The name reflects commercial activity from the 15th and 16th century by Portuguese and French merchants. It's 26.4M population is 43% Muslim and 34% Christian (17.2% Roman Catholic). The Holy See and the Ivory Coast established diplomatic relations in 1970. The €2,40 stamp marks the 50th anniversary of the agreement signed by Pope Paul VI and Felix Houphouet-Boigny on 26 October 1970. The stamp depicts Pope Francis and then president Alassane Ouattara. In the background is the Basilica of Santa Maria della Pace in Yamoussoukro, built on the model of St. Peter's Basilica and consecrated by Pope John Paul II in 1990. The arms of both countries are also included in the design. The stamp is printed in sheets of ten.
