The Sts. Peter and Paul Association was founded in 1971 by Pope Paul VI after the dissolution of the papal armed corps by the same pope in 1970, in order to carry over the legacy of the Palatine Guard of Honor of His Holiness. With the establishment of the Sts. Peter and Paul Association, the association underwent its definitive transformation from a military corps to a civil service. The members are Catholics of Rome who wish to bear special witness to Christian life, works of Christian charity and the service offered mainly in the Papal Basilica of St. Peter's. On June 29 the Church celebrates the feast day of Sts. Peter and Paul. The €1,15 stamp shows the area of Bernini's baldacchino (a towering bronze canopy sculpted over the High Altar of St. Peter’s Basilica) in the foreground, where most of the Association's activities and service take place. The design also includes the Association's coat of arms depicting both Sts. Peter and Paul. The stamp was designed by British artist Liam Hippie.
