During his trip, he traveled to a number of cities across the country, including Quebec City, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, and Vancouver: ![]() Pope John Paul II Tours Canada: September, 1984 During his voyage, the pope celebrated Masses, met with political leaders and indigenous peoples, and spoke on a range of topics, including the importance of family, the role of faith in society, and the need for social justice. One of the most memorable moments of his visit was his meeting with indigenous leaders in Yellowknife, where he expressed his regret for the injustices that had been inflicted on Canada's indigenous peoples. On September 16, 1984, Pope John Paul II was in Toronto, Canada, as part of his tour of the country. During his visit to Toronto, the Pope celebrated an outdoor Mass at the Exhibition Place, which was attended by over 400,000 people. He also visited various other locations in the city, including St. Michael's Cathedral and the University of Toronto, where he delivered a speech on the importance of education. Pope John Paul II visited Winnipeg on September 17, 1984, as part of his tour of Canada. He arrived at the Winnipeg International Airport in the morning of September 17 and was greeted by a large crowd of people. The Pope then went on to celebrate Mass at the Winnipeg Stadium later that day, where an estimated 70,000 people attended the event. After the Mass, he met with various groups, including the disabled and members of the Ukrainian community, before departing for his next stop on the tour. The 1984 visit of Pope John Paul II was the first of three trips to Canada. He returned on September 20, 1987, for a one-day visit, which served as a follow-up to the 1984, when parts of that trip were cancelled due to poor weather conditions.
