on the Way to Jubilee 2025
3rd Issue Focuses on Africa

The miniature sheet dedicated to a symbolic pilgrimage around the world in preparation for the 2025 Jubilee was in its third issue and focuses on Africa. After leaving Oceania and stopping in Asia, it has reached the African continent, the place of Pope Francis’ latest apostolic journey. The Marian image depicted on the stamp, next to the African continent, is that of Our Lady of Africa. Dupuch, the first bishop of Algiers received as a gift in 1840 a bronze statuette of the Virgin Mary, a copy of a work made by Bouchardon in 1750. At first, the statuette was placed in the Trappist monastery of Staouëli in Bouchaoui, a small village not far from Algiers. Following the definition of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, the new bishop of Algiers, Louis-Antoine-Augustin Pavy, decided to build a large church with a chapel for the bronze statuette of the Virgin Mary, later venerated as Our Lady of Africa. The skyline below the €3,10 stamp and the garment of Jesus also have details that recall African culture.
