This cover comes from my collection. It is a postcard of Pope Pius XI and was sent from Vatican City to someone in Rome over ninety years ago. It is franked with two 10c stamps from the first Vatican issue, sometimes called the Conciliation issue. The stamps (Scott #2) display the Papal Coat of Arms. There are two cancellations, with one being a good, clean example of the I-10 handstamp! The postcard is also interesting. It is a period card produced for the Special Holy Year of 1933-1934 to celebrate the 1900th anniversary of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The card displays the clothed image of Christ on the cross, with an image of the Sacred Heart on his robe. Pope Pius XI is standing in the forefront of the card, giving the sign of blessing. The skyline of Vatican City is seen in background on the left of the card, and on the right background is Mount Calvary, or Golgotha, with three crosses outlined against the background. The crosses were used to sacrifice Christ and the "two convicts" who were crucified with Him on Good Friday. The title of card, arched over Christ, reads "Redemptor Mundi", or "Redeemer of the World", in Latin. Along the bottom of the card are printed "Anno Santo" ("Holy Year") 1933-1934, and Roma. The reverse of the card bears the address for delivery in Rome and the simple message "1 Apr 1933 Anno Santo". A nice card for a special time in Church history. |
