Postmark Identification Program Under Development

Marvin Lanahan

Perhaps the most difficult part of postmark identification is getting started. The VPS website is attempting to make this easier. If we can convince you to sign onto the website, with a relatively a couple of keystrokes and a few clicks we can help you identify that postmark on your Vatican stamp cover. It is not perfect yet, but the Vatican postmark identification program is getting better every day. The database is increasing in informational quantity and quality. The computer program is increasing in complexity.

The idea is to help collectors identify Vatican postmark types by submitting some key information about the postmark, then the program will search the VPS database and display present a list of possible postmark types. This will take a little playing around with things to see how things work. To get started, sign into the VPS website, go to the Member Page, select the Reference tab on the menu bar and select the Postmark Id Help program option. Start with something simple like selecting one of the postmark groups, press select, and see the response. Then put in the date of a cover and see the result difference.

The database behind this program is in the process of being populated and, with time and some program improvements will give better, more accurate responses. Creating a complex database like this takes a lot of time. The work is not that complex, it just takes a lot of time to enter and check the data entry. If you would like to participate, working from your home computer, please contact Marvin Lanahan at mlanahan404@comcast.net. We could use some help to move this project along.

As you use the VPS Postmark Identification program, try to think of a way to improve it. Then, use the contact page found on the website Member page and let us know your idea. We look forward to hearing about your idea!
