ABOUT THE ARTICLES ON POPE PIUS XII The two articles presented above originally appeared in the journal of the National Philatelic Museum, Volume VII, Number 1, 1954. That issue of the journal is a book that was produced in concert with the Vatican Marian Year Philatelic Exhibition, which was held at the Museum in Philadelphia from September 22 through November 5, 1954. The Marian Year coincided with the 25th Anniversary of the Vatican City State. The journal was edited by renowned philatelic author Ernest A. Kehr, who was also a member of the Vatican Philatelic Society. The book included articles contributed by other VPS members, including the first President of the Society, William Wonneberger, Jr. The excerpts above were part of an extended article entitled "The Vatican's Postage Stamps: Country's foremost Vatican Philatelist presents complete background of stamps since 1929". The article provides a detailed review of all Vatican stamps issued from the city-state's inception in 1929 through the book's publication in 1954. The Marian Year Exhibition book is a "must-have" for any serious collector of stamps issued by Vatican City, as well as its predecessor Roman States. The Vatican Philatelic Society is extremely grateful to the Spellman Museum of Stamps and Postal History for granting us permission to reproduce the copyrighted material from the journal. The Spellman Museum took possession of the materials of the National Philatelic Museum upon its closure in 1960. The VPS Website Team has enhanced articles from the journal by inserting relevant images of the stamps described by Mr. Wonneberger, as well as covers to future document the history of the stamps.
