Things We Think We Know!

Marvin Lanahan

Each night, at approximately 1:30 AM Central Time (USA), the Vatican Philatelic Society's Daily Email is sent out to VPS members. This service is relatively inexpensive, with costs primarily covered by a generous VPS donor. Over the years, the VPS website team has developed several insights into this process.

First, we are deeply grateful to VPS member Lou Giorgetti, who uploads the Daily Emails from the GoDaddy server—located somewhere in the western United States—to the email server in Great Britain. The service is called the "Email Octopus". While we believe the server is physically based in England, the most important thing is that the VPS emails almost always go out on time! The conversion to the Octopus last year greatly improved the reliability of the Daily Email transmissions.

Based on observations, we suspect that most members read their emails on a mobile device. Approximately 60–65% of VPS emails are opened daily, though some members prefer to catch up by reading multiple days of emails at once.

Over the years, both the volume and quality of VPS Daily Emails have improved. There is some speculation that the daily email volume now rivals or even surpasses that of the quarterly Vatican Notes, a 60-page publication. Both efforts are entirely volunteer-driven, and everyone involved is compensated the same—zero dollars.

We believe that receiving the daily VPS emails along with the quarterly Vatican Notes offers great value for your membership dollars. We sincerely thank you for reading our content and hope you continue to enjoy being a member of the Vatican Philatelic Society! And free free to provide feedback and ideas to the VPS Website Team--we would love to hear from you.
