Vatican Post Announces
Release of New Stamps

Lou Giorgetti

On Monday, Poste Vaticane announced the upcoming release of the latest stamps for 2025. This third quarterly release will take place this Sunday, September 7.

In August, Vatican Post made two announcements on upcoming stamp releases. The first regarded the stamps honoring the canonizations of Blesseds Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati, which are being released on the day of their Canonization Mass. These stamps, issued jointly with Italy, San Marino and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, are each valued at €1.35. The second was a previously-unannounced stamp to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the proclamation of the Dogma of the Assumption. That stamp will be denominated at €1.30.

Monday’s report included the following issues which are also part of the third quarter release:

  • Decade of Ecosystem Restoration – Year IV (stamp value: €2.55)
  • 550th anniversary of the birth of Michelangelo Buonarroti (souvenir sheet, valued at €3.35)
  • Witnesses of Hope: Saint Charles de Foucauld (stamp value: €1.35)
  • 600th anniversary of the founding of the University of Leuven (stamp value: €1.35) This is another stamp that was not on the initial listing of stamps for 2025.

For each of the new releases, there will also be special cancellations marking the first day of issue. In addition, there are other special postmarks planned for the third quarter.

Finally, it was announced that two commemorative folders are also being produced. The first will be released on September 7th for the canonization of Blessed Carlo Acutis. The second will be available on October 7th (the Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary) and will be a Marian folder dedicated to the anniversary of the dogma of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Also, on September 2, the Vatican Post website released an article featuring an interview with Don Felice Bruno, Head of the Vatican Postal and Philately Service. It provides a brief but interesting look at some of the decision-making surrounding Vatican City stamps as he discusses the following topics:

  • Joint stamp issues (tied to the Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati stamps)
  • The process for selecting subjects for new stamp issues
  • Selection of artists and graphic designers for Vatican City stamps
  • Special printing techniques for new issues
  • Criteria for planning stamps to commemorate anniversaries and other temporal events
  • The impact of digitalization and the decline in traditional mail services

The interview is a rare look at the operations of the Vatican Post. The full article can be accessed by clicking on the link in the references below.
