During his Angelus message yesterday in Saint Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV announced that the installation of Saint John Newman as the 38th Doctor of the Church will take place on Saturday, November 1, coinciding with All Saints Day:
”I am pleased to announce that on November 1, during the Jubilee of the World of Education, I will confer the title of Doctor of the Church on Saint John Henry Newman, who contributed decisively to the renewal of theology and to the understanding of the development of Christian doctrine.”
Word of Saint John Newman’s selection as the next Doctor of the Church was released on July 31 and was presented in a Daily Email on August 3. Click on the link in the References to see that Email.

As a side note, there have been three recent developments involving the Church and Great Britain. In addition to the elevation of the Englishman Saint John Newman, this past week it was announced that King Charles III will be making a state visit to the Vatican in late October. Although the date has not yet been announced, there is speculation that the visit could coincide with the Newman event. King Charles has shown a great interest in the English saint, who converted to Catholicism from the Church of England in the mid-1800’s. Also, Katharine, the Duchess of Kent, a member of the Royal Family and a convert to Catholicism, died in September. Her Catholic funeral, attended by the king, was the first such funeral for a member of the Royal Family in modern history.
