Thoughts on Vatican
Philately: Part 2

Lou Giorgetti

Many thanks to those VPS members who replied to the Daily Email entitled “Thoughts on Vatican Philately”. The shared opinions and experiences provided some clarity (if that’s the right word) to what we are seeing from CFN and the Vatican Post Office.

One comment that struck me was this:
“Unfortunately, the problem seems to go well beyond the issue of communication. The main reason for the current state of affairs is that the staff in Rome, apparently at all levels, lacks the motivation to do their jobs properly…Until the culture of those departments changes, I doubt there will be any substantial improvement.”
The sad reality is our view of the Vatican Post Office as a preeminent postal service has been shattered. We have always been told that the Vatican had the most efficient postal service, but that no longer seems to be the case.

As an unintended experiment, while I was in Italy earlier this month, I sent three sets of postcards back to family and friends, from three different postal authorities. As of November 1, here are the results:
  • Vatican City—mailed from a famous yellow mailbox in Saint Peter’s Square on October 13. Those cards arrived October 30--17 days.
  • San Marino (a side trip I highly recommend to anyone visiting Italy)—mailed from one of their white mailboxes on October 16. Cards received the following week (October 24--8 days).
  • Italy (Venice)—mailed on October 18 via the notoriously inefficient Italian postal service. Those cards have also not arrived.

Thankfully, some readers have reported receiving their orders from CFN (placed in July). Hopefully the rest of our orders will be out the door soon and in our mailboxes.

Keep the faith and let us know how things work out with your orders. Thanks again for your feedback!
