Surprise! A New Vatican City Stamp

Lou Giorgetti

Saint Benedict of Norcia: Patron of Europe
Scott 414-415 (1965)

On Friday, the Vatican News website unveiled a previously-unannounced new stamp released by Vatican City. The stamp was issued to commemorate the dedication of the Basilica of Saint Benedict in Norcia. According to the press release:
”The Postal and Philately Service is issuing a stamp dedicated to the Basilica of Saint Benedict in Norcia, on the occasion of its reopening and new dedication following the restoration work required following the 2016 earthquake, which severely damaged the building.

Built between 1290 and 1338 on the site traditionally considered the birthplace of Saints Benedict and Scholastica, the building is the result of a series of construction and restoration projects over the centuries and represents one of the most significant symbols of Benedictine spirituality and European Christian culture.”
In addition to the new stamp, a special postmark and commemorative folder have been issued as part of the release. Click on the link below for the 2025 Vatican City philatelic press releases and scroll to pages 67 to 70 for views of the stamp and postmark (the press release is in Italian but can be translated using online translation tools).

Saint Benedict has been honored in two previous stamp issues by Vatican City: the 1965 set when he was named a Patron Saint of Europe (stamps shown above) and the 1980 set marking the 1500th anniversary of his birth (Scott 668-672)
