2026 Vatican City
Philatelic Program

Lou Giorgetti

The Vatican Post Office issued a press release this past Monday on the Vatican Post website announcing the stamp issues for 2026. Here is the press release (translated to English):

“The Post and Philately Service of Vatican City is pleased to present to collectors the schedule of philatelic issues planned for the year 2026.

Annual Issues
  • Pontificate of Pope Leo XIV MMXXVI
  • Easter of the Resurrection MMXXVI
  • Holy Christmas MMXXVI
  • Decade for Ecosystem Restoration: Year V
  • Europe 2026: “70th Anniversary of the Europa Stamp”
  • Pope Leo XIV’s Travels Around the World – Year 2025

    Commemorative Issues
  • 600th Anniversary of the Apparition of the Madonna of Monte Berico
  • 150th Anniversary of the Birth of Pius XII
  • 200th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between the Holy See and Brazil
  • 300th Anniversary of the Birth of Saint Gerard Majella
  • 40th Anniversary of the Encyclical Dominum et vivificantem
  • 325th Anniversary of the Founding of the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy
  • 400th Anniversary of the Consecration of the New Basilica of Saint Peter
  • 800th Anniversary of the Founding of the Cathedral of Toledo
  • 300th Anniversary of the Canonization of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga
  • 70th Anniversary of the Death of Lorenzo Perosi

    Joint Issues
  • 800th Anniversary of the Death of Saint Francis of Assisi
  • 1st Anniversary of the Pontificate of Pope Leo XIV”

The release follows a similar format used over the last few years regarding the groupings of the new stamps. The Vaccari News philatelic website (www.vaccarinews.it) noted that there is a “generic entry” for an annual postal card set (although this is not mentioned in the press release) and that there is no mention of an annual aerogramme. Also, there is no mention of the countries or authorities participating in the two joint issues, although San Marino has announced a stamp for Saint Francis. Joint issues tied to topics on the Italian peninsula in recent years have included participation by the Vatican, San Marino, Italy and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, so it remains to be seen if any or all of those entities are joining in the announced joint issues.

As an additional note, a press release on December 19 announced the availability of the 2025 Philatelic Volume. As of this date, however, the book is not presented on the CFN website for purchase.
