This year marks the 400th anniversary of dedication of the rebuilt Saint Peter’s Basilica in 1626. That ceremony capped a century-long replacement of the original basilica with the monumental structure seen today at the Vatican. This past Monday, Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, Archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica and President of the Fabbrica di San Pietro, revealed a series of events and initiatives tied to this year’s anniversary celebration.

During the press conference, Cardinal Gambetti stated the anniversary year will begin today, February 20. It will conclude on November 18 (the Feast of the Dedication of the Basilicas of Saints Peter and Paul) with a Mass presided over by Pope Leo XIV. He outlined some new programs and initiatives that pilgrims to the Basilica will be able to enjoy, including:
  • Multilingual liturgical platform
  • Access to previously inaccessible areas
  • Spiritual accompaniment and renewal, including weekly “Spiritual Elevations” of prayer and sacred music, and a special pilgrimage route and theatrical performance tied to the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul on June 29

In addition, Microsoft will be implementing a new institutional font (called “Michelangelus”) into the Microsoft Office package. The font is inspired by the handwriting of the great Michelangelo Buonarroti.

Cardinal Gambetti concluded his comments by noting that Pope Julius II, starting in 1506, had to demolish the old edifice to rebuild the great Basilica. However, today’s renewal utilizes advanced technologies, not demolition, to assure that Saint Peter’s Basilica will be “welcoming pilgrims for centuries to come.”

On a philatelic note, the Poste Vaticane 2026 Philatelic Program lists a stamp to be issued at some point this year to commemorate the anniversary of the dedication of the Basilica.
