This past Tuesday, May 5, VPS Webmaster Marvin Lanahan met with Father Felice Bruno, the Head of the Postal and Philately Service Office at the Vatican. Also in attendance were Marica Fabris of CFN, VPS Member Father Gaurev Shroff, and Marvin’s wife, Mary. Marvin reports that a wide variety of subjects raised by our members was discussed, and that the meeting was very successful. There will be more to report once Marvin returns from Europe.  Pope Benedict XVI: Visit to Spain, 2010 Scott 1489 (2011) The pope will embark on this fourth international pilgrimage voyage next month. The trip to Spain will cover seven days, from June 6 through June 12. The Holy See website published a detailed itinerary last Tuesday, and that release can be viewed by clicking on the box below. A highlight of the trip will be the inauguration and blessing of the Tower of Jesus Christ, part of the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. The Basilica was consecrated 16 years ago by Pope Benedict XVI (see stamp above from his visit in 2010).  Saint Francis of Assisi: 750th Anniversary of Death Scott 607 (1977) Although outside our normal purview, the Vatican released a special coin this past week to honor the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi. Jointly issued with Italy and San Marino, the 0.75-euro copper coin takes its theme from one of Saint Francis’s most famous writings, “The Canticle of the Creatures”. There is also a stamp to commemorate this year’s anniversary on the Vatican Post program for 2026. It will also be a joint issue with Italy, with the date of release yet to be announced.
