They say things really slow down in Rome during the summer months—I guess that’s true. This past week there was very little in the news out of the Vatican and the Vatican Post Office (no surprises like last week’s announcement of six new stamps). But the pope did make a bit of news that we can tie to Vatican City Stamps. 
 Images of the Abbey of Monte Cassino: Scott 415 (1965) and Scott 672 (1980) Pope Leo Visits Monte Cassino Last Monday, Pope Leo XIV took a day trip during his current summer retreat to Castel Gandolfo to the historic Abbey of Monte Cassino, which was established by Saint Benedict of Norcia 1400 years ago. During the visit, the pope prayed at the tomb of Saint Benedict and met with members of the religious community. The pope also visited two other sites last week. On Wednesday, he went to the remote mountainside Sanctuary of the Most Holy Trinity in Vallepietra and prayed before a revered Byzantine era fresco of the Holy Trinity. He then went to nearby Subiaco and visited the Benedictine monasteries of Saint Benedict and his twin sister, Saint Scholastica. Pope Leo returns to the Vatican today as his summer vacation comes to an end. |
