The Vatican Philatelic Society is pleased to welcome its newest member: We wish Daniel many years of happiness and fulfillment as a member of VPS! As was announced on Friday, four new Vatican City stamps were released for sale today. There is also a bit more regarding the release of the joint issue for the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi stamp that is being issued by Vatican City, Italy, San Marino and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM). Both San Marino and SMOM have announced a release date of October 4 (which is the feast day for Saint Francis of Assisi). In addition, a ceremony to unveil the new stamp is being held in Assisi at the Basilica of St Francis on Friday, October 2, to be attended by the four postal administrations. Following a celebration of the Mass in Metz this afternoon, the pope returns to Rome later this evening. Last week, the Vatican released the pope’s itinerary for his voyage to South America in November. He will be visiting three countries on the following dates: Prior to Pope Leo’s upcoming pilgrimage, there have been five papal trips to these three countries, with Pope John Paul II making four of those trips: June 1982—Argentina February 1985—Peru February/March 1987—Uruguay and Argentina May 1988—Uruguay and Peru In January of 2018, Pope Francis visited Peru. Famously, he did not return to his native Argentina during his pontificate. |
