![]() Scott 1866 (2024) This past Wednesday, David Steiner, the United States Postmaster General, visited the headquarters of the Postal and Philately Service of the Vatican City State. He was accompanied by his wife and was welcomed by Father Felice Bruno, Head of the Service. Mr. Steiner toured the facilities of the Vatican postal system and had a chance to see the activities of the service. During the visit, Mr. Steiner “expressed a keen interest in Vatican philatelic products, focusing on the issues and the unique features that make Vatican philately prized by collectors and enthusiasts around the world”. In particular, the 2024 stamp shown above, issued to mark the 40th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between the Holy See and the United States of America, was highlighted. On Thursday, the Vatican Post Office issued a press release announcing its latest stamp, commemorating the 800th anniversary of the founding of the Cathedral of Toledo. The new stamp was released yesterday, Sunday, October 25. It is a “surprise” since it is being issued outside of a normal quarterly stamp release schedule. The stamp commemorates the start of construction on one of Europe’s most important churches, the Cathedral of Santa María de Toledo, in Spain, which is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Construction began in 1226, with the laying of the cornerstone on August 14 of that year. The stamp has a face value of 1.35 euros. In addition to the stamp, the Post Office also issued a special postmark for the first day of issue. To view the press release for the stamp and special postmark, click on this LINK. |
