The 2014 Easter stamp contains detail from a mosaic in the Redemptoris Mater Chapel located in the second loggia of the Apostolic Palace. The chapel is located adjacent to the papal apartments and is reserved for the exclusive use of the pope. The College of Cardinals donated funds to renovate and decorate the chapel in honor of Pope John Paul II's 50th anniversary of his ordination in 1996. The Chapel was dedicated 14 November 1999.
The mosaics in the chapel reflect Byzantine artwork. John Paul II's idea was that the chapel mosaics would represent Christ through history and seek union between the See of Peter and Eastern and Western Churches, in a perfect harmony of art and faith.
The €0,85 stamp depicts the Risen Christ with Saints, one bearing a chalice and paten, the other holding scripture. Two other Saints bow before Christ. The stamp met the rate for a letter delivered to Western Europe and was issued in a sheet of ten stamps.
