World Youth Day is an international gathering of Catholic young people (typically ages 16-30) from around the world held approximately every 2-3 years in varying host countries. It began with Pope St. John Paul II in 1984 as an outreach to the youth of the world and an invitation to an encounter with the Pope and other young people. The first World Youth Day was held in Rome, Italy in 1986.
The World Youth Day 2011 was held in Madrid, Spain 16-21 August 2011. It was organized on the theme
"Planted and build up in Jesus Christ, fine in the faith."
Pope Benedict XVI selected the theme which calls on young people to be global witnesses to Christian hope and to become an instrument of the Word of God. Pope Benedict XVI arrived in Madrid on 18 August. He participated in various events over the next four days and celebrated the final Mass on Sunday August 21.
The €0,75 Vatican City stamp issue contains the logo for World Youth Day 2011 and was issued in sheets of 10. A Spanish €0,75 value stamp was a joint issue with the Vatican.
