Filippo Brunelleschi (1337-1446) designed the dome for the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral in Florence. Considered one of the greatest architectural achievements of the Renaissance, it was built between 1418-1436 and consists of two interconnected ogival shells (ogival meaning intersecting transverse ribs of an arch). The inner shell is self-supporting while the outer shell is a covering for the inside shell. The dome was consecrated by Pope Eugenio IV in 1436. A lantern, also designed by Brunelleschi, was installed after his death in 1444. Brunelleschi also designed the equipment used to construct the dome, allowing heavy weights to raise supplies to complete the dome. <br><br> <center><img height='300' src='http://vaticanstamps.org/VPS/images/296/1679M.jpg'></center><br> The €1,00 depicts a side view of the cathedral including the dome and it is printed in a mini sheet of four stamps. <br><br>
