Relations between the Holy See and Poland have existed at the embassy level since 1555 when the first resident diplomatic representative of the Holy See with the rank of Nuncio arrived in Warsaw. The signing of a concordat at the beginning of that century was an earlier testimony to the existence of even earlier non-residential diplomatic relations between them. Diplomatic relations were interrupted when Poland was absorbed by Russia, Austria, and Prussia in1795. The Polish state ceased to exist, but regained its independence in 1918 after World War I. In 1919, the Holy See and Poland established diplomatic relations.
A €1,15 stamp depicts the first 100 years of the resumption of diplomatic relationships between Poland and the Holy See. The stamp, designed by Stefano Mori, depicts Pope Benedict XV and Josef Pilsudski, President of Poland. An identical stamp was issued by Poland. A Vatican City first day cover is also offered to mark this anniversary.
