The Circle of St Peter was founded in 1869 through the initiative of a group of young Romans. For 150 years, the Circle has been working in support of the Church’s charitable activities to help those who are most in need. Pope Francis says that in all these years of activity, the three original fundamental principles: prayer, action and sacrifice, have always prevailed in Circle of St Peter. They have, in fact, he continues, been the foundation of a blossoming in their activities in the field of charity - activities that the Pope encourages them to pursue “with renewed enthusiasm”. <br><br> The single €1.10 stamp depicts a man whose face is caressed by the Lord's hand, a painting by artist Daniels Longo. The design also includes a dove, the symbol of the Holy Spirit, and the chalice containing the blood of Christ, with reference to the words action and sacrifice, key commitments of the Circle of St Peter. <br><br>
