Volterra is located in Tuscany. The site has been inhabited since the 8th century B.C. A bishopric was established from the 5th century. Often controlled by Florence (sometimes with resistance), it became part of the Medici Grand Duchy of Tuscany in 1530. Pope Calixtus II consecrated the new Basilica of Volterra on 20 May 1120, with the name Santa Maria Assumpta. It was raised to the status of a minor basilica by Pope Pius XII in 1957 due to the building's historic, ecclesiastic, and architectural importance. The cathedral is laid out in Romanesque style with a Latin Cross plan and three naves. It has been rebuilt several times, most notably at the end of the 16th century. Volterra is recognized not only architecture but the long history and enduring Christian presence in Italy. <br><br>The €1.10 monochrome stamp was designed by artist Maria C. Perrini. The stamp is a joint issue with Italy. A special folder was also offered with a stamp, a block of four stamps, a post card, and an envelope and first day cancellations from each postal administration, with the cost at €30. <br><br>
