St. Anthony of Padova's choice to become a friar was the result of his encounter with five Italian missionaries who were leaving for Morocco when they suffered martyrdom. Impressed by their example, he wanted to follow in their footsteps, but fell seriously ill. As a result, he intended to return to his native land of Portugal in the spring of 1221 when a fierce storm forced a shipwreck on the coast of Sicily. There he was welcomed by the friars of Messina who arranged for him to meet with St. Francis in Assisi 8 centuries ago. His feast day is celebrated on June 13.
The €2,40 souvenir sheet features Saint Anthony with the Child Jesus in his arms, and on the right his journey from Milazzo to Padova is traced. The sheet was designed by the illustrator, Bimba Landmann.
