2022 Activities of Pope Francis:
(Source: www.ReligiousNews.com)
1. Pope Francis and the war in Ukraine
- Pope Francis broke protocol and rushed to the Russian Embassy to plead for peace with the ambassador. The pope's unwillingness to condemn Russia and Vladimar Putin drew criticism.
2. The Synod of Synodality
- The pope's ambitious project, in its second year, saw conservative and liberal Catholics face off over the prospect that the synod might do too much — or too little — to change the church.
3. The continuing shadow of clerical abuse
- Clerical abuse scandals erupted in numerous parts of the world, especially in Europe, where the church has witnessed the most significant drops in Mass participation and priestly vocations.
4. Vatican reform: A never-ending story
- The long-awaited document enshrined the reform effort made so far in Vatican departments and opened the door for laypeople to become department heads in the Catholic institution.
5. Travels of Pope Francis
- Pope Francis travel schedule included visits to Malta, Canada, Kazakhstan and Bahrain.
6. Health of Pope Francis
- The pope's health deteriorated to the point of requiring a wheelchair.
7. The end of the era of two popes
- The death of the retired Pope Benedict XVI on December 31, 2022 put an end to the unique period of having two popes inside the Vatican walls.
The stamps for the Pontificate of Pope Francis 2022 issue were part of the activities and initiatives for the Year of the Family, called by Pope Francis on 19 March 2021 on the occasion of the Solemnity of Saint Joseph and the fifth anniversary of the Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia.
Accordingly, the postage stamp issue is dedicated to the main relationships that are experienced in the family: marriage, for the €1,10 value that reproduces a photo from 14 September 2014 when Pope Francis celebrated in Saint Peter's Basilica the group wedding of twenty young couples; the family, for the €1,15 value, which depicts the Pope while baptizing a child on the day of the Baptism of the Lord; children, for the €2,40 value which represents the Pope while embracing a child; finally, grandparents, for the €3,00 value featuring the Pope showing affection to an elderly lady during a general audience.
The stamp series aims to represent the love, care and tenderness that Pope Francis has for all families, especially for the most fragile members.
