The Palace of Spain is a baroque palace that houses the Embassy of Spain to the Holy See for 400 years. The Embassy of Spain to the Holy See is the oldest embassy in the world. Its history is also the history of diplomatic relations between Spain and the Papal States. It established its premises in the Palace of Spain, located at Rome’s Piazza di Spagna square. The Piazza di Spagna (English: Square of Spain) is one of Rome’s most renowned squares. On September 8, 1857, Pope Pius IX inaugurated the Column of the Immaculate Conception that presides over the Piazza di Spagna in memory of the definition of the dogma of the Immaculate of which Spain was a tenacious defender for centuries.

The stamp issued for the occasion of the 400th anniversary by comes in a miniature sheet of five €1,20 stamps, featuring a painting of the impressive Palace by Giovanni Paolo Pannini made in 1727, displayed in Apsley House in London. The official logo designed by the Embassy for the anniversary related celebrations appears next to the title of the stamp issue.
