Ending more than a century of official estrangement punctuated by revolution and suppression, the Vatican formally resumed diplomatic relations with Mexico, one of the world’s largest Roman Catholic countries. “An old anachronism has been overcome,” A Vatican spokesman told reporters. “These new relations are not an end in themselves, but a framework that will permit the church to operate normally in Mexico.” Under an agreement announced in a Vatican communique, five days after the 171st anniversary of Mexican independence, Mexico and the Holy See exchanged ambassadors for the first time since separation of church and state was decreed by Mexico’s revolutionary president, Benito Juarez, in the middle of the 19th Century. 
Mexico’s Secretariat of Foreign Affairs and the Holy See’s Secretariat of State signed an agreement on 21 September 1992 that reestablished diplomatic ties, based on common values and joint actions to promote respect for human rights, while accounting for the importance of Catholicism in Mexico and the separation between Church and State. 
The €2,40 stamp produced for the 30th anniversary was designed by Patrizio Daniele and depicts the national coat of arms of the two states united in this important project with the respective national colors appearing in the background.
