One of the interesting things in the Vatican Museum is the Gallery of Maps. I found the two pictures of this (shown below) on the internet. The Map Gallery shows 40 topographical maps along the two walls of the regions of Italy, and other Church possessions, that Pope Gregory XII had painted between 1580 and 1583. These maps are an important and impressive record of 16th century geography.
To aid VPS members that need to reference historical maps of Italy and Vatican City, members James Hamilton and Gregg Piozzi have put together a series of maps that can be found in the exhibit section of this website (see links below). There are lots of other things in the VPS Exhibit Room to view, including several high-quality collection presentations. Additionally, there are PDF references on subjects of interest to Vatican collectors. There are lots of things to see in the VPS Exhibit Room. Ok, I'll concede, the Vatican Museum has a few more, but we are building our collection!
We are always look for additional material to add to the Exhibit Room. If you have something that you would like to add to the VPS Exhibit Room please contact Marvin Lanahan, VPS Webmaster, email address: mlanahan404@comcast.net.
This FDC from 1986 shows Scott #773a-f Vatican City stamps.
Maps can be found on a number of Vatican City stamps. and postcards.
