World Youth Day, Lisbon
Original Issue: Scott 1828 (2023)
World Youth Day, Lisbon
Reissued Stamp: Scott 1829 (2023)
The ill-fated 2023 World Youth Day Stamp is a story that keeps on giving for your VPS Website Team! Last month, the question was raised regarding the issuance of catalog numbers for the recalled stamp. VPS member Patrick Moore provided information regarding a catalog number being issued by the Michel Catalog (Vatican Mi. 2085). In addition, VPS Webmaster Marvin Lanahan noted that
Linn’s Stamp News
reported that Scott Catalog has assigned the reissued stamp a number (Vatican City Scott 1829), but that catalog number Vatican City Scott 1828 had not been assigned to a stamp. Finally, VPS member Dan Bayer, owner of the Penny Black Stamp Company, shared a communication he received from Amos Media, the publisher of the Scott Catalog, indicating that indeed Scott 1828 would be used for the recalled stamp. Last week, Dan reported that the latest issue of
Scott Monthly
shows that the recalled stamp has been officially assigned Vatican Scott 1828.
Dan also reported that, on a recent trip to Rome in December, he was told that the Vatican Post Office was not providing First Day cancelling for the recalled WYD stamp. This will result in a very limited supply of covers bearing the recalled stamp and the first day cancellation (for the lucky few folks who bought and used the stamp upon its release on May 16, 2023).
Thanks again to Dan for providing an insider's view of the workings of the Vatican Post Office--we are certainly fortunate to have his perspective.
