Answer
Detail Answer
St. John Lateran was the first large place of worship to be built within the city walls. Constantine's edict of 313 granted Christians freedom to worship and they chose to erect this church near the site of the Laterani family residence.
The dedication to John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist was later added by Pope Gregory the Great (590-604).
