Bartolome de las Casas
(1484 - 1566) was among the first writers to actively campaign for the rights of indigenous peoples of the Americas. Officially appointed "Protector of the Indians", he was the administrative officer of the Spanish colonies that was responsible for attending to the well-being of the native populations, including speaking on their behalf in courts and reporting back to the King of Spain. Sailing with Christopher Columbus, he was one of the first Europeans to set foot into the new hemisphere and later dedicated his life to the desire of ending the harsh treatment of Indigenous Americans.
