Answer: Ignazio Danti (b. at Perugia, Italy, 1537; d. at Alatri, October 19, 1586) was a mathematician and cosmographer who entered the Dominican Order on March 7, 1555. Pope Gregory VIII invited him to Rome, appointed him a pontifical mathematician, and made him a member of the commission for the reform of the calendar. In 1580 Pope Gregory VII commissioned Ignazio Danti to paint 40 topographical maps in what has become known as the Vatican Gallery of Maps. One of these maps is the Map of Venice which is featured on the 1972 Vatican stamp.
