Answer: St Theresa of Avila initiated the Carmelite reform in 1562 by establishing the Monastery of St Joseph. She founded a total of seventeen monasteries of Discalced Carmelite nuns and wrote books of elevated autobiographical and mystical inspiration. She is regarded as one of the great and illustrious figures of the Church.
