Answer: The Swiss Guard is the last army of Swiss mercenaries, a group that reached great popularity during the 15th and 18th centuries because of their special effectiveness. The body was created on January 21, 1506, three years after Pope Julius II occupied the Chair of St Peter and requested soldiers to the Swiss nobility for his own protection, thus creating a group of 150 men.
