Who was the first Pope to travel by plane?

   Pope Pius IX
   Pope Pius XII
   Pope John XXIII
   Pope Paul VI

Your answer was: Pope John XXIII.

Answer: Paul VI was the first pope to travel by plane when he made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1964. In 1964, the Vatican was still far away from recognizing Israel as a Jewish state. But the sudden decision by Pope Paul VI to visit Israel laid the foundations for future popes, and the Catholic world, in general, to begin reconciling with their Jewish brethren.
