Answer: St Bartholomew was co-founder and fourth abbot of the Grottaferrata monastery near Rome. He is also considered to be one of the most prolific Byzantine hymn writers of the 11th century and a skilled calligrapher. Bartholomew was responsible for persuading the corrupt Pope Benedict IX to resign the papacy, reform his life, become a monk, and do penance at Grottaferrata.
