Answer: Before the Battle of Milivian Bridge in 312, Constantine had his soldiers mark their shields with the Christian monogram XP, representing the two letters chi(X) and rho(P) of the Greek alphabet. These are the first two letters of the Greek word Christos, meaning "annointed", an epithet attributed to Jesus. By doing this Constantine believed it gave his army the extra edge to win the battle. In 2012 the Vatican Post Office issued a mini-sheet to commentate 312 the Battle of Milivian Bridge based on a painting started by Raphael but finished by a student painter named Giulio Romano.
