The Daily Question

What task south of Rome did the World Health Organization undertake in the early1960s that the Roman army had not been able to accomplish?

   control the rats
   drain the swamp
   feed starving immigrants
   round up stray cats

Your answer was: drain the swamp.
You are correct!!

Answer: In the early 1960s, the World Health Organization (WHO) undertook the task of draining the Pontine Marshes south of Rome. This task had been attempted by the Roman army and almost every other Italian government. The Pontine Marshes were a known source of malaria which was rampant during the summer because of the dampness. To help call attention to the WHOs efforts the Vatican Post Office issues several stamps in 1962.
