| Blessed Lady |
Your answer was: Black Madonna. |
Answer: "Our Lady of Częstochowa" is a venerated icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It has been intimately associated with Poland for the past 600 years. Its history before it arrived in Poland is shrouded in numerous legends that trace the icon's origin to St. John, who painted it on a cedar table top from the Holy Family house. The same legend holds that the painting was discovered in Jerusalem in 326 by St. Helena, who brought it back to Constantinople and presented it to her son, Constantine the Great. Today, the Polish people continue to honor their beloved portrait of the Madonna and Child. Because of the dark pigment on Our Lady's face and hands, the image is affectionately called the "Black Madonna." The pigmentation is ascribed primarily to age and the need to keep it hidden for long periods of time in places where the only light was from candles, which colored the painting with smoke. Currently, Our Lady of Częstochowa is housed at the Jasna Góra Monastery in Częstochowa, Poland. 'Our Lady of Częstochowa' on CatholicTradition.com
