Answer: On Pentecost Sunday, May 17, 1970, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his ordination, Pope Paul VI ordained to the priesthood 279 men from 5 continents. In an open‐air ceremony the Pope urged the new priests to remain united with their bishops and “never betray!” The pope told them that they must spend the rest of their lives “in a spirit of sacrifice.”
Before administering the sacrament of Holy Orders by laying hands on the young men from 33 countries, including the United States, the Pope prayed that God give them “a pure heart that knows evil only to define it, fight it and flee it.”
