Your answer was: Pisa Cathedral. |
Answer: Santa Maria Assunta is the main Catholic place of worship in Volterra, in the province of Pisa. It is the mother church of the homonymous diocese consecrated by Pope Callixtus II in 1120. In November 1957 Pope Pius XII elevated it to the dignity of a minor basilica. It is not certain what the first city cathedral was; in any case, from the ninth century there was a church dedicated to Santa Maria. Rebuilt after the violent earthquake of 1117, it was enlarged in the second half of the thirteenth century. The cathedral shows a decoration of classic taste, including lunettes adorned with the technique of the flattened ornate of pre-Romanesque taste, and sloping rhombuses that welcomed ceramic basins in the center. The same rhombuses are also present in the salient façade, divided into three compartments by quadrangular pilasters of the Lombard type. on GettyImages.com ![]() Basilica Cathedrale Santa Maria Assunta in Volterra 1750 (2020) |
