You are correct!!

Answer: On May 13, 1981, as Pope John Paul II entered St. Peter's square in an open vehicle, he was by was struck with four bullets fired from a gun fired by Turk Mehmet Ali Agca. Pope John Paul II had a very strong belief that his life had been protected by the Blessed Virgin Mary. In honor of Mary's believed intervention, Pope John Paul ordered that a mosaic be placed in Saint Peter's square which was done in December of 1981. Until that time, no other statue or mosaic of the Blessed Virgin had been built into Saint Peter's square.
