Answer: On February 11, 1858, in Lourdes France, the Virgin Mary first appeared to a 14-year old peasant girl named Bernadette Soubirous. The Virgin Mary asked for a chapel to be built on the grounds, for Bernadette to pray for the conversion of sinners, and for her to drink the spring water that was revealed to her at the grotto. The story continues to attract nillions of pilgrims to visit the site every year since Bernadette first saw the Virgin Mary. The Vatican Post Office has issued two sets of stamps related to the Marian asperations at Lourdes. The first set was released in 1958, the first centenary of Bernadette's visions. The second set of stamps was issued in celebration of 150th year anniversary.
