Your answer was: Milan Cathedral. |
Answer: The construction of the Milan Cathedral (Duomo di Milano), famous for its spires, began in 1386 and ended 6 centuries later. Construction was repeatedly interrupted, either by lack of funds, by politics, or by local frustration with an endless huge project in the city center. It cost the lives of many priests, architects, stonemasons and other people dedicated to this building. At the beginning of the 19th century, after capturing the city, Napoleon Bonaparte wanted to be crowned king in the Cathedral. He wished, however, that this would happen in the finished building, which is why he suggested that he would pay all expenses. Seven years later the façade was completed, and the ceremony took place according to the leader's wishes. Therefore, at the top of one of the many towers is a statue of Napoleon. Considering its construction is still continuing, this could be considered the longest-worked cathedral in the world. A five-year project to clean the building was started in 2002 and routine restorations and cleaning are continually taking place to keep maintain its gleaming stone. In 2016, the exciting challenge of restoring the dome began. The Milan Cathedral is the second largest 'Gothic' cathedral in the world, second only to St. Peter's Basilica. The building can accommodate 40,000 people.
