How did the Italian merchants obtain the relics of Saint Nicholas in 1087? Saint Nicholas was the Bishop of the ancient Greek city of Myra in Asia Minor (modern-day Demre, Turkey). He died between 345 and 356 in Myra and was initially buried in Myra.

Answer: St. Nicholas of Myra died between 345 and 356 in Myra and was initially buried in Myra. Basically in 1087 his relics were stolen and taken to Italy. Click here to read the story. In 1987 the Vatican Post Office issued stamps to commemorate the 'transfer' of the relics.
